Just back from Chicago, city of dyed-green rivers - Happy St Patrick's Day one and all!

Did they get the river to turn an actual Irish green this year?

The one time I was there around St Patrick's Day the river wasn't a true green, it was the color of tarnished copper, as if there'd been an industrial accident upstream.

Given the landscape the Chicago River flows through, I wasn't seeing food coloring at all.

According to Time Out Chicago, the colouring is really an orange food colouring - so a tarnished copper look might be possible
